NEW ORLEANS, LA— Students whose lives have been forever changed by the devastating flooding in Baton Rouge will get an exciting delivery today to give them some peace of mind during their transition back to school.

On Tuesday, September 6th, a Louisiana Motor Coach bus stuffed with 6,000 backpacks filled with school supplies, will depart New Orleans and head to East Baton Rouge Parish. Saints Punter Thomas Morstead’s What You Give Will Grow Foundation launched Team Comeback Kids immediately after the catastrophic flooding, asking people and organizations to donate school supplies and money for more than 120,000 residents in the affected parishes.

6,000 backpacks will be distributed to students throughout East Baton Rouge parish. 450 of those will be given to Park Forest Elementary students, who have been relocated at Eden Park Elementary. First Lady Donna Edwards will be on hand to receive the Saints Punter and his special delivery.

Team Comeback Kids has been fortunate enough to receive help nationwide. Supplies can be dropped off at any Southwest Airlines cargo terminal where they’ll be shipped to Louisiana for free. The goal is to deliver 50,000 school bags to children, which amounts over                              $1 million in school supplies. 100% of the donations to Team Comeback Kids is going back to the community. With discounts from vendors, a $1 donation turns into $1.75.

None of this could have been made possible without generous sponsors like Chevron. If your business would like to help the non-profit provide relief to kids in need of school supplies, please visit the sponsor page.

Thomas Morstead’s School Supply Drive Gets Soaring Help

Southwest Airlines and the Miss United States Organization Partner to Help Louisiana Flood VictimsMISSUSsouthwest

NEW ORLEANS, LA– Saints punter Thomas Morstead is getting national help with his new initiative to help the victims of Louisiana’s catastrophic flooding. Southwest Airlines and the Miss United States organization are teaming up with the NFL star to get school supplies to kids who live in the devastated areas.

Last Friday, Morstead’s What You Give Will Grow Foundation launched Team Comeback Kids, asking people and organizations to donate school supplies and money for more than 120,000 residents in the affected parishes.

Now Southwest Airlines and the Miss United States National Pageant System are backing the NFL star’s cause. The reigning 2016 titleholders and newly-crowned national queens are fundraising for school supplies and donations within their states. The Mrs. United States National Pageant System, a sister-pageant for married women, is participating as well.

“We are thrilled to partner with ‘What You Give Will Grow’ to assist with the recovery efforts. Service to community is one of the cornerstones of our system and we look forward to being able to provide support during this very difficult time,” says Stephi Barton Williams, National Director of the United States National Pageants, Inc.

Southwest will take the donations from the reigning queens in all 50 states and deliver them to Louisiana free of charge. Southwest will also accept bulk school supplies from anyone wanting to donate at any Southwest Airlines cargo counter.

The American Red Cross says the recent flooding in Louisiana is the worst U.S. natural disaster since Superstorm Sandy in 2012, killing 13 people, and displacing tens of thousands. Morstead says, “School supplies are the last things on the minds of parents who no longer have a roof over their heads. They’re basically having to start over. It’s amazing how much support is coming in to help Team Comeback Kids. Louisiana has a special place in the hearts of those of us who live here, and for the millions who visit from all over the world.”

The start of Team Comeback HQ!

One of the first missions of Team Comeback was to set up the infrastructure to get the supplies out to people in need. In times of disasters, logicists are the toughest part. The estimates say that the number of children affected are over 200K, now think about moving that many fill backpacks. It takes lots of organization and planning. Read more

Team Comeback Kids Initiative Provides Hope for the New School Year

NEW ORLEANS, LA— Catastrophic flooding has displaced thousands of people across southern Louisiana. According to the Associated Press:

  • 13 dead
  • 40,000 homes affected
  • 30,000 rescued
  • 70,000 registered for federal disaster assistance
  • 11,000 in shelters (at the height of flooding)

While donations and supplies are pouring in, one of the last things on the minds of families who’ve lost everything, is school supplies for their kids.

Saints Punter Thomas Morstead’s What You Give Will Grow Foundation wants to help ease that worry. Some schools in the flooded areas will be open as early as next week, even while many families will still be displaced from their homes.

What You Give Will Grow just launched the Team Comeback Kids school supply drive. The organization is collecting donations and volunteers are needed to pick up supplies, stuff backpacks, and hand out supplies to affected schools.

Schools and teachers in need of supplies are urged to sign up so WYGWG can determine the areas where the need is the greatest.

Morstead says, “My teammates and I have heavy hearts while we’re on the road training for the NFL season. I love Louisiana. It’s home. It’s where my kids are born and raised. That’s why What You Give Will Grow is making a conscious effort to help families take at least one worry off their minds, which is school supplies.”

WYGWG’s Executive Director Dennis Lomonaco adds, “As communities slowly continue to rebuild, and schools open, we want to continue helping families over time, so the need is great and we encourage people to keep donating throughout the school year.”
